Ilya based the talk on the example of Cryptoflex smart cards broken back in early 2005.
These now–legacy smart cards had a severe vulnerability. This vulnerability also affected other smart cards based on the same technology.
In the talk, Ilya described a developed attack on a card to extract a cryptographic secret and private keys.
Another intention of this presentation was to bring public attention to a class of simple attacks. These understudied and unfairly ignored attacks do not need any specific equipment to target secure hardware.
